Trivium, meaning three roads in Latin, is Grammar, Dialectic and Rhetoric
The beginning knowledge of everything you want to know. Every subject has a grammar stage, but it is not limited to knowledge it applies to Child development as well. Grammar age students (birth to 9) have specific characteristics that we can use to our advantage when educating them.
Memorizing, singing, mimicking, story telling, and parroting.
You will find in our grammar classes a mixture of all of these in order to teach with the grain of our students.
Understanding how the knowledge you've acquired is related to itself and to other areas of study. Connecting the dots. For child development these are the years of the never ending questions. The need to understand why something happens or how it works is formative in students at this age (10-14).
In our program we have added a specific afternoon class for these students to use what they are memorizing through diagramming and essay writing.
The art of rhetoric is used to prepare students for persuasive arguments in written and spoken form. These students have specific desires and wants that are shaped into articulate, sometimes on parents, arguments. Our mandate as Christians is to spread the gospel, make disciples and baptize in the name of Jesus. With rhetoric our students will know the gospel, present it well, and lead others to Jesus.
High School can be an intimidating arena to homeschool in, but with growth in rhetoric your student should be more independent with every year.
Although these three words to not perfectly compare they do offer a very close example of how the bible fits into classical education.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction: Proverbs 1:7
Pursuing Wisdom through a Classical education.
Discovering Delight in Restful Learning.
Growing Together in a Community of Learners.
We meet one day a week as a community but every other day of the week you are home leading your students.
How you lead your students at home is part what we did in Community and part what you have chosen to round out the curriculum.
Whatever you decide to add you are encouraged to make it restful and shaped by your loves.
Once a month our Director holds an online meeting for the teachers to think about Classical Education and how to better implement it in our homes.
Homeschooling can be done on your own, but if you find a community to practice the art of Homeschooling in you will be blessed in more ways then you expected.
